The Bountiful Garden Foundation's Heirloom Tomatoes

Whether it is our Spring Tomato Seedling sale or our produce in Farmer's Markets or Harvest Festivals, BGF specializes in over 100 varieties of delicious, vintage, heirloom tomatoes (some varieties dating back over 150 years).

What's an Heirloom Tomato?

Heirloom  tomatoes are so-called because of the fact that these strains pre-date industrialized commercial farming cross-pollination techniques that created the modern tomato.  In the 1950s, biologists from U.C. Davis University, in a effort to create tomatoes that were machine pickable, disease and insect resistant, possessing a longer shelf life, easily stackable (perfectly round) and red in color, they managed to inadvertantly breed the flavor out.

Heirloom tomatoes on the other hand have short shelf lives, are labor intensive and can be butt ugly but they are packed with flavor and are worth every penny.  If you're going to go through the time and effort of growing your own tomatoes, don't bother with Hybrid tomatoes from your local hardware store, plant some of our Heirloom Varieties.  You'll never go back.

Seedling Varieties

All of our strains are open pollinated.  We do our 100% best to preserve strain integrity but some cross pollination has been known to occur and create unique new fruit.  Choose from one of the many categories below to review our selections.
